Cave Art Centre of Cantabria

Alberto I de Monaco

The Alberto I de Monaco Cave Art Centre of Cantabria is a place to get to know, learn about and enjoy Palaeolithic cave art.

Its aim is to contribute to a better management of the regional archaeological and rock art heritage, with special attention to the Cantabrian caves declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

Its permanent exhibition provides an approach to Palaeolithic cave art that is not physically accessible, as it allows visitors to see caves that are not open to the public, as well as corners of the caves that can be visited that are not included in the tour.
The installation is completed with temporary exhibitions related to early art seen from different perspectives. Thus, this centre contributes to broadening the vision of Palaeolithic cave art in Cantabria, showing it in all its splendour and variety by means of exhibition resources that provide the closest possible experience.

About the permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition, located in the main wing of the building and covering an area of 500 square metres, revolves around the big questions that arise when we are faced with understanding Palaeolithic art: what is it, who made it, when was it made, where is it located, how was it made, why?

A journey through three exhibition rooms that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Palaeolithic art and to seek answers to all these questions.

Palaeolithic art is presented in this exhibition in connection with the natural spaces in which it finds its true meaning, placing the ten caves in Cantabria recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO at the centre of the discourse.

Ten exceptional caves which, together with many other Cantabrian caves, have made it possible, thanks to the studies and research carried out, to reconstruct the life and symbolic world of the people who inhabited them.
